Jai Cook was born Jerri E. Cook, on April 9, 1974. Jerri “Jai” Cook is from Lexington, Kentucky and has one daughter named Ayres Marcel E. Cook. The birth of Ms. Cook’s daughter, 27 years ago, gave her life purpose. Jai Cook reveals "at a pivotal point in my life when I was ready to give up, Ayres was born and her birth gave me my voice back”.
Jai is the youngest of six children. Born from a mentally ill mother and a poorly educated father, Jai’s birth mother befriended the Cook family. Jai was placed with the Cook family at age 6 months and left when she was a Senior in High School. Unfortunately, Jai’s Foster Mother was battling domestic violence, and alcoholism and Jai was the victim of unfortunate circumstances.
“As a foster child living in foster care from infancy to age 17; I was a victim of mental, physical and sexual abuse.” Jai was bullied in school by her peers for how she dressed, spoke and walked. “I wasn’t the cool kid”, Jai recalls. Jai wore the clothes of the foster brothers, because her foster mother used the government funds on the biological kids. Jai suffered from depression, self-loathing and contemplated suicide because of her upbringing. Jai admits she used to be angry at her foster mother for many years, until she understood that she had an illness. With professional help from counselors and support from family and friends, Jai learned to cope with her circumstances and forgive. “Once I learned the power of forgiveness, I was able to live life, and not just exist in it”. Determination has been the key to Ms. Cook’s success as an entrepreneur over the past twelve years!
